Happy Catholic Schools Week! Thank you to all of the parents that attended and/or helped with the auction. It was a fun night and a great way to celebrate our school. Reading: "Buster is Back" and "Buster's Surprise" We are working on setting and how to tell how people in the story feel, without the characters actually saying how they feel. We are also working on comparing things by adding 'er' and 'est'. This week in First Grade: Reading: We have started contractions using n't. The way that I taught the students this was...For example: is not.....I said we take the word is and scoot the word not over next to it...isnot....then we get rid of the letter o and in the o's place we add an apostrophe....is not...to isnot...to isn't. We are reading, "Icky's Play" and "The Spingle Spangle Talent Show". Now that we are really into reading, I'm pushing the students that are ready to read with expression. Other students are practicing reading fluently-trying to not stop and sound out words that they have seen a bunch. Writing-Planning a Personal Narrative---We will write a narrative together this week, step by step. Next week they write their own. Grammar- Forming Compound Words- bedtime, seashell, playground---turning two words into one word. Spelling Words: isn't, didn't, hasn't, hadn't, aren't, wasn't, weren't, haven't, couldn't, wouldn't Math--Finishing Counting on-numbers to 20...if we have time we will start Chapter 8---adding and subtracting to 20. This week in class: Reading: Our stories this week are: "Let's Put on a Play" and "The Contest:A Play". We are focusing on the vowel pairs of 'ea', 'ee', 'oa' and 'ue'. We are also working on homophones- two words that sound the same, but are spelled differently. Our homophones are: see,sea---sale, sail---meet,meat---week, weak Spelling Words: blue, tie, heat, keep, would, could, some, one, new, were Math: Place-Value Chart, converting ones to tens, knowing that if you have the number thirteen, thirteen is one ten and three ones. Welcome back!! Thank you all so much for all of the gifts you sent for me. I felt spoiled and loved. I hope you all had a great Christmas and break. I didn't hear any complaints about being back in school!! We slowly eased our way back into school today. We started our day off with mass and then later on the students all went to computer and library. This week in class: Reading: We are learning that when vowels are together the first vowel usually makes the long sound. We talked about these vowels being pairs. This week our vowel pairs are "oa" and "ai". I tell the students, " When two vowels go walking the first one does the talking." We are reading, "Lily's Little Boat" and "The Little Horse". Writing: Opinion----Generate ideas about a topic, support opinion...finish with a paragraph about if they like playing inside or outside better. Spelling: mail, tail, nail, rain, train, boat, coat, float, load, and road Math: Numbers to 20- Counting, writing, and spelling numbers to 20, working with numbers in a place value chart, knowing how many tens and how many ones in a number and figuring out the difference between two numbers. Also, in the homework folder I added a number line to help students with subtraction. Please leave the number in their folder. A letter went home in the planner today about our class auction item. Mr. Yorba (Sadie's Dad) will be making a fire pit. Please send in your contribution so he may be reimbursed for his materials. Reading: Practicing long vowel words- learning that when we add the 'ed' or 'ing' endings to words with a silent e on the end we drop the e and then add the ending...for example- hike---hiking---hiked. I told the students that if they do not know the words with the ending...cover the ending and if the word has one vowel and one letter after the vowel before the ending the vowel is long. This will take a lot of practice... Just be patient reading is a process that takes time. The stories we are reading this week are: "A Helmet for Hot Rod" and "Race Day" Writing-Practicing writing a friendly letter...also using First, Then, Next and Finally or Last when writing. Spelling: baking, baked, smiling, smiled, oh, any, day, good, very, want Math- Finishing subtraction and fact families---we will still be subtracting for homework. We are adding in "Super e" at the end of words to learn that when there is a "Super e" at the end of a word the vowel will be long and say its name. For example, kit is a CVC word (consonant, vowel, consonant), but when we add a "Super e" to the end it is now kite, CVCe word (consonant, vowel, consonant, plus e). Reading- "When the Superkids Pretend" and "The Foolish Giant". This week we are working on maind idea and details. We are also starting long vowel sounds this week. Writing- Finishing our books about our field trip to Hunter Farms and a descriptive story. Spelling Words- go, no, so, be, he, me, she, we, hi, flu The rule we are focusing on is when a word only has one vowel and the vowel is at the end of the word it usually makes the long vowel sound. Math-Ways to Subtract, -1 Science-Classifying Animals Social Studies-American Symbols Art-Veterans Day Art and starting centerpieces for the Thanksgiving Program All Veterans are invited to attend our Veterans Day Program on Thursday at 8:30 in the auditorium. November 14th-Thanksgiving Program---Our class is NOT in the program---we are making the centerpieces for the tables. November 15th-Kindergarten and 1st Grade-Morning Thanksgiving snack together. We are the pilgrims and the Kindergartens are indians. +++Also Operation Christmas---2 toothbrushes and 2 dental flosses are due Thursday the 8th. ---Thanksgiving Donations---2 cans of Cranberry Sauce---due Tuesday the 13th. Also, thank you to all of the parents that worked the school carnival. I know the students I saw were having a great time!! I have planned an ambitious schedule considering we have Halloween and All Saints Day Mass. On Wednesday after the Halloween Costume Parade/Contest we are going to be coloring our own Jack O'Lanterns and writing a short description for them...I tape each pumpkin to the board and put a number under it. Each student reads their description and if we are able to guess which pumpkin is theirs within 3 guesses the student receives 2 pieces of candy. Each student will receive a piece of candy for participating. This takes us awhile, but the students love it and quickly realize how important it is to put some effort into a description. This week in class: Spelling: flipped, flipping, stepped, stepping, there, from, be, to, we, or Reading: We are reading, "Dominic's Apple" and "Yuck! Yuck!"---Problem and Solution Writing- We are writing a story about our field trip Grammar- Take a verb and turn it into a noun by adding er....for example- swim...swimmer....The students are also learning that the one vowel, one letter after the vowel applies to adding 'er' at the end words not just 'ed' and 'ing'. Math- Start the basics of subtraction-counting backwards Religion-Saints Science- All About Animals---Make little notebooks of animal groups Social Studies--American Symbols Art-Fall Art MASS Thursday---All Saint's Mass October 31st is the last day that shorts may be worn for our uniform. Homework---I did not send home the Spelling Triangles in the Homework Folder this week...I think some of the words would not fit in the triangle. All of the rest of the homework is the same. Reading---We are learning the 1,1, 1 rule. If a word has one vowel and one letter after the vowel, one more letter needs to be added to the end of the word before 'ed' or 'ing' can be added. For example: hug, one vowel and one letter after the vowel...one more g needs to be added before adding the 'ed' and the 'ing'. hugged, hugging If a word only has one vowel and one or more letters after the vowel, the last letter does not need to be doubled. For example: help, helped, helping Our stories this week are: "The Big, Bad Blob" and "The Monster Under the Bus" Spelling Words: helped, helping, asked, asking, hugged, hugging, shopped, shopping, grinned, grinning Writing: Narrative---We will be writing a book about our field trip to Hunter Farms Math: Finishing Ordinal Numbers, going back to Chapter Four for subtraction.
