Happy St. Patrick's Day! Thank you to those of you who emailed and checked in with me yesterday. If you didn't email me, please make sure to do that today and everyday so that I am able to take attendance. That is the only way I will know you are seeing these posts. Today I am posting a fun (optional) virtual spirit week challenge for your child to participate in. If you choose to participate, your daily check in email will include a picture of your child participating in the challenge! I am also posting a few (optional) St. Patrick's Day read aloud stories for your child to listen to. You would need to download a qr code app to your phone. The camera works like a qr code reader on some IPADS, as well. Visit my teacher Pinterest page(see right) for ideas about other activities to do at home with your children! As always, email me with questions or concerns! Hope everyone has a happy and healthy day!

Happy Monday! I hope everyone was able to read my last blog post with the assignments for the week. I have already talked to some of you. Please don't hesitate to contact me if questions come up. The children are allowed to write in their math workbooks. All other loose assignments should be kept in a safe place, such as in your child's homework folder, so that your child can turn them in when school resumes. I am required to take attendance daily, so please send me an email everyday to check in and let me know you are staying up to date with the blog and assignments. I look forward to hearing from all of you! Stay healthy and dry!

Week 1: At Home Lesson Plans

3/15/2020

All Superkid workbook pages and practice pages, as well as math and writing assignments listed in the daily schedule should be completed and returned to school for a grade. Addition and subtraction fluency should be practiced on a daily basis. Your child should also practice decoding, spelling, and handwriting each day. Decoding, spelling, and handwriting assignments will not be turned in, but the Superkid program stresses the importance of never missing these 3 mini lessons each day.

1. Decoding: Read aloud rows listed from the big book of decoding pages. (See below)
2. Spelling: Dictate the words and sentences for your child. Help children check their spelling and correct any mistakes. Neat handwriting, spaces between words, and punctuation are very important!
3. Handwriting: Write the sentence(s) and have your child copy it.

Being that this is new to all of us, I know questions and concerns may arise. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns you may have at [email protected]. You will find extra online resources at the bottom of this post. If students forget their login information for any of the sites, please email me.

Spelling Words: car, far, star, card, hard, born, corn, horn, short, sport
Memory Words: both, again, laugh, cold, does, know

Monday
Decoding: Rows 1-3 from pg. 28 of the big book of decoding (bottom of post)
Spelling: drawing, crawling, yawning; Who is calling me?
Handwriting: The Grand Canyon is best of all! You can ride a mule down its steep walls.

Superkids: Workbook pg. 68-69, Practice pg: 51, Read Superkid Short pg. 112
-Teach words with ar as in star; Example words: far, dark, car, start, party (Children can wiggle their fingers like twinkling stars when you say words with the ar sound at the end or middle of the word.
-Teach words with or as in horn; Example words: short, worn, story, corn (Children can pretend to honk a horn when you say words with the or sound)

Math: Workbook pages: 45-48; Have your child choose a number 20-40. Write a sentence and draw a picture to illustrate their number. For example, Twenty leaves fall from a tree. The page should include the number in standard and word form.

Writing: Choose a character (who): astronaut, elf, knight, princess, monster, superkid. Choose a setting (where): school, farm, castle, Mars, forest, park. Then, have your child tell you a story that includes the character and setting they chose. Encourage them to be as descriptive and creative as possible. Discuss after whether their story would be like real life or not real life.

Tuesday-Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Decoding: Columns 1-2 pg. 29 of big book of decoding
Spelling: corn, horn, born; The star is far.
Handwriting: Use a sleeping bag and a tent to sleep under the stars.

Superkids: Workbook pg. 70, 71; Read story, “Slumber Party,” on page 113.You may want to read the story aloud to your child the first time. Then they can read page 113-117 or read the whole story.
-Practice pg. 52 will not be turned in, but it can be used to make flash cards or to play a memory match game if your child is struggling with the memory words.

Math: Workbook pages 49-50

*Extra practice (nothing to turn in for the extra practice) Use dimes and pennies to reinforce the concept of tens and ones. Show your child that one dime equals ten pennies, and so a dime can be traded for ten pennies. Have your child count by tens to count groups of dimes. They can also identify 2-digit numbers that are represented by a group of dimes and pennies. Make sure to wash your hands while singing “Happy Birthday” twice after this activity!!

Writing: Remind your child about the story they told you yesterday. Today they will focus on the character they chose. Discuss how a character may act (Ex: nice, friendly, sad, shy, bossy, helpful). Have your child draw a picture of the character. Write a paragraph (5 sentences) that includes the character’s name, what type of character it is (animal, person, other), how the character acts, and what the character likes to do.

Wednesday
Decoding: short, fort, fork, cork, cord, corn, corner
Spelling: short, sport, fort, fork; We both like corn.
Handwriting: The slumber party starts at seven. Lily does not know if she will go.

Superkids: Workbook pg. 72, Practice pg.53 (after teaching suffix -ful), Reread/Finish reading “Slumber Party” pg. 113-122 and discuss Lily’s feelings at different points throughout the story. Ask your child about a time they felt afraid. Everyone is afraid of something. What could they say to a friend when their friend is afraid, to make them feel better?
-Teach the suffix -ful. Point out -ful is not the word, full, which ends with two l’s. It is an ending called a suffix. When the suffix -ful  is added to the end of a word, it makes a new word that tells what someone or something is like. Examples: In class, the girl was helpful. I am thankful for my friends and family.

Math: Workbook pages 51-53

Writing: Talk about and respond to one of the following questions in 1 or more complete sentences. Draw and label a picture of the problem and solution.
  1. Ettabetta wants to have a picnic with Toc, but it’s raining outside. How can the problem be solved?
  2. Frits wants a kitten, but his dad is allergic to cats. How can the problem be solved?

Thursday
Decoding: hard, card, cart, dart, dark, park, part, party
Spelling: hard, card, dark, park; The kids laugh at the party.
Handwriting: Tic and Cass both laugh at the last part of the story. Lily does not.

*Extra Practice (not to be turned in): Make flashcards for the following memory words: again, both, laugh, cold, does, know, come, they, our, put. Have your child read memory words out loud.

Superkids: Workbook pgs. 73, 74; Optional:Practice pg. 54, 55,OR 56 after reading/listening to one of the library books using the Superkids Online Fun website. “Extreme Sports,” “It’s a Robot,” and “The Turtle Who Wanted to Fly” are the three optional books to choose from.

Math: Workbook pages 54-56

Writing: Resource pg. 12 (See below)-Your child will use the character they used for the writing lessons from Monday and Tuesday to complete the page.

Friday
Decoding: Rows 1 & 2 on page 30 of big book of decoding
Spelling: Give your child a spelling test with the spelling words.
Handwriting: It was cold and dark in the tent. Looking at the stars made Lily feel better.

Superkids: Play a game with your child using workbook pgs. 76,77
Game Rules: Each player gets a game marker (boy or monster). Put word cards in a stack facedown. Players set game markers on space marked start. Then players take turns picking a card, reading the word, and moving their marker to the nearest space on the board with the same word. If you land on a space connected to a bridge, take the shortcut to the space on the other end. If you land on a space touching the pond, forest, or rocks, you lose a turn. The first player to reach the pot wins the game.

Math: Spend today focusing on addition or subtraction fluency. Your child should be able to tell you what test they are on. Ideas include, making flashcards, practice timed tests, or anything that is going to make sense and work for your child. If you need copies of timed tests please email me! (Nothing to be turned in)

Writing: Write a short problem-and-solution story, using story plans from yesterday’s lesson. Their draft should include:
Beginning-Tell about the character and setting.
Middle-Explain the problem and solution in more detail. This can also include how the character feels about the problem and solution.
Ending-Sum up what the character feels, has learned, or will do next
