Week of April 23-27 Hello Parents! The end of the year is quickly approaching. Students tend to catch a bit of spring fever this time of year. Please remind your child to stay focused, to continue to put forth effort in their classwork, and to follow classroom rules. I forgot to pass out progress reports on Friday so I will make sure that your child comes home it on Monday..I apologize for my oversight! Math: We will continue with our chapter about Time, Social Studies: In our California Studies Weekly we will be learning about Inventors. Science: We will begin a new chapter, Changes in Habitats. First Holy Communion is Saturday, April 14, 2018 at St. Patrick's Church the ceremony begins at 9a.m. Please be at the church by 8:45 a.m....if you will be taking pictures in the Parish Hall with Jay Sousa then make sure you get their during your schedule time-the notice with regarding time slots was given out during conferences. If you have misplaced the letter I have extra copies in the classroom. On Friday, April 13, 2018 we will be practicing at St. Patrick's Church first thing in the morning..please remember to drop off your child at the church not at school. Remember it is a short week Thursday, March 29th is a half day (no extended care) and Friday officially begins our spring break. Last week during conferences we talked about First Holy Communion..just a reminder that First Holy Communion is Saturday, April 14th it begins at 9:00am at St. Patrick's Church. Important Days February 10th-All School Mass at St. Patrick's Church February 13th-We will be celebrating Valentine's Day. We will have a small party and children are welcomed to exchange valentine cards. There is also Free Dress. February 14th-Ash Wednesday. All School Mass 8:15am. Children must be in formal uniform. February 19-23-NO SCHOOL This week in class: Reading-chapter 21, Superkids reader. Focusing on fluency, reading with tone and expression. Phonics-teach adding -ing and -ed; verb tenses for irregular verbs; continue learning story elements; and narrative writing, problem/solution story. Math-wrap up our chapter on Measurement. There will be a test Friday, February 9th. We will also be reviewing math addition, subtraction, place value, regrouping, and multiplication. Science-read and discuss our chapter, Forces and Motion. Social Studies-our weekly is United States Government. We will discuss the three branches of office. Religion-we are preparing for First Holy Communion. Last week we began our program BLESSED. Classroom behavior needs improvement..we are in the second half of the school year. Students know what is expected of them-bad behavior will have consequences! Also, I have caught a few students not writing in their planners. This is unacceptable--writing in our planners is apart of our daily morning routine. All students are expected to bring their planner to school everyday and write down whatever information I write on the board! We have a Math test on Wednesday, January 18th. We began this chapter before Christmas break-- we have been learning 2, 5, and 10 times tables. I have expressed to the students how important it is to have these math facts memorized. There are still some students who are struggling with these math facts. I have suggested to the students and a few parents to buy flash cards and have your child review them daily. First Holy Communion is Saturday April 14th. I will be sending out a letter with information regarding this very special sacrament. Catholic School's Week will begin on Sunday, January 28th there is a School Mass at St. Patrick's at 9:00am. This week in class: Math- test Wednesday, January 17th. Last week a permission slip went home for the Christmas Program practice at St. Patricks Church. If you have not already done so please sign and turn in the slips ASAP. Please have your child there by 6:15 PM. Dress code is church clothes. If you took the Catholic Identity Survey your child will have free dress this Friday, December 15th. A free dress pass was given out today to those students whose parents took the survey. On Friday, December 22nd there is free dress for everyone. It is a minimum day that Friday. NO EXTENDED CARE!!! I hope everyone had a blessed and relaxing Thanksgiving break:) This is an important week for our second graders as they will be receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Penance service will begin at 6p.m. at St. Patrick's Church. Please be at the church by 5:45p.m. This is not a mass so the service will be about 45 minutes or so. Have your child dressed in church attire. Also, for those of you who are not Catholic...your child is more than welcomed to join the class for the Penance service. Non-Catholic students are able to receive a blessing from the priest. If you choose not to attend the service that is more thank okay. Reminders, please talk to your child about following class room rules. No talking during class time, raising their hands to get out of their seat, be mindful and respectful to their classmates, to make sure they are taking care of their personal items and most importantly to remember to write their spelling words first thing Monday morning.. It seems like every week I have parents asking me what the spelling words are because their child did not write them down. I have the spelling words on the board Monday morning. When students come into the classroom they are to unpack, sit down, open their planners write their spelling words and their homework for the day, then start their morning work. This has been the routine since the first day of school. Please remind your child to stay focused and to follow class protocol! Also, homework help will be Tuesday-Thursday, 2:30-3:00pm This week in class: Reading--Chapter 14 of our Superkids. Learning to read with natural phrasing and expression. Reading a text within a text; introduce parts of a play script; and reading dialogue in a play. We will discuss different places on Earth and their landforms and weather. Also, we will talk about how people who live in different parts of the world have different communities and different lives. Tuesday, November 14 @ 9:45am we will be going to Cherish. We will return no later than 10:30. Wednesday, November 15 @ 6:30pm 2nd graders will be performing in the Thanksgiving Program. Please have your child dropped off at our classroom by 6:15pm. Please have your child dressed in causal church attire. No t-shirts, jeans are fine. Next week is Fall break. Please remember that the Tuesday we return from break, November 28th our 2nd graders will be making their First Penance-a letter went home with your child a week ago with all the information. A reminder that this is a Penance Service and not a Mass. Please have your child wearing nice church clothes. It has been brought to my attention one of our 2nd graders is missing a sweatshirt. Please make sure that your own child has his or her own sweatshirt and not their classmates. Most parents write their child's name on the inside tag. Also, please make sure your child takes care of his or her sweatshirts many sweatshirts are found on the ground in the classroom as well has being left outside on the playground. Tell your child that when they take off their sweatshirt they should immediately put it in their backpack. I will no longer be doing homework help on Mondays. Homework help will be Tuesday-Thursday 2:30-3:00pm. Please make sure you pick up your child by 3:00...otherwise he or she will be sent to extended care. Extended care costs $5.00 an hour. The month of November will be busy for our second graders. The most important thing happening in second grade this month is your child will be receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This special event will be on Tuesday, November 28 at 6:00 pm at St. Patrick's Church. A letter will be going home with your child on Monday regarding information about this blessed celebration. Remember NO SCHOOL this Friday, November 10th. Other important dates to remember.... Tuesday, November 14- Cherish. If you volunteered to drive please plan on doing so..I will write in your child's planner a reminder as the date approaches. Wednesday, November 15- Thanksgiving Program.
