It was brought to my attention that only half of my blog posted this week. My apologies--my blog has not been cooperating with me these past couple of months. However, I think I have fixed the issue and moving forward there should be no problems. All postings and alerts should be going out on time! I have already met with a few of you this week and I am looking forward to talking to the rest of you today and later this week. Phonics-decoding 'o' words, encoding and decoding ay/long 'a' words, using commas, review long 'a' sounds, we will be learning about poetry and writing Mystery Creature Poems. Math -we will wrap up chapter 4. There will be a test on Friday, October 19th. A study guide will go home with your child on Wednesday. Please review the study guide with your child so that they are prepared for their test. Social Studies- Maps and Globes. We will talk and learn about the purpose of maps and globes. Science-we will begin a new chapter "Earth Long Ago." Tuesday, October 9th we have our community service project at Cherish. If you volunteered to drive please plan on being on campus by 10am...a reminder was written in your child's planner on Friday. This week in class: Reading~ chapter 8, in Superkids. Practice reading accurately, at an appropriate rate, and reading with expression. Phonics~ comparative and superlative adjectives with -er and -est; teach adding -er and-est to words ending in ing; -er sounds; review synonyms and antonyms; and compound words. Math- we will continue with chapter 4. There will be no math homework this week. We are learning to use bar models to solve two-step word problems. This can be confusing for kids, I prefer for this chapter to keep the learning in the classroom. However, if you would like your child to have bar model homework please write me a note in their planner and I will make sure he or she goes home with it. Science~ we will wrap up our chapter on Natural Resources. There will be an open book test on Wednesday. Religion~ we will continue to discuss the Ten Commandments, forgiveness, and God's love for us. Social Studies~our weekly this week is Where is the United Staes. In class this week.. Reading~ chapter 5 in Superkids. We will practice using natural phrasing, practice observing punctuation, reading with expression and comprehension. Phonics~ teach the -s & -es plurals, work on using syllables to decode longer vowels, we will finish publishing our narrative, and then begin to learn how to write an opinion piece. Review nouns, verbs, adjectives, and contractions. Social Studies~ California Studies Weekly focus is "North American Indian Nations." Children will learn about different Indian tribes, Indian customs, and cultural. Science~start a new chapter, People, Grow, and Change. Religion~ we begin chapter 6, its our Reconciliation chapter. This is chapter is a good introduction to the Sacrament of Penance. At the beginning of October our Religion class centers on preparing students for the Sacrament. The date posted but my actual blog did not. My apologizes, moving forward I will make sure my blog posts before signing off. ***Homework Help*** Will be Monday and Wednesday from 2:30-3:00. Please make sure that you are here by 3:00 to pick up your child. My two older children play sports for OLM and have games on Wednesday..sometimes these games are out of town and we leave by 3:00pm. Your child may stay for help starting this week. In Class this week: Reading- Chapter 4 in Superkids. We will practice reading rhythmically, observing punctuation, reading accurately, and comprehension. Phonics-review long and short vowel patterns, introduce adjectives, review verbs and nouns, and we will complete our narrative writing. Math- there will be a test on Wednesday, September 12th. On Monday your child will go home with a study guide. Make sure to review with your child. On Thursday we will begin chapter 3, Subtraction with 3 digit numbers. Social Studies- in our weekly this week we will learn about Explorers. Also, we will continue to study maps. Science-last week we completed our Animal Research project. This week we will have a test on Thursday, September 13th this will complete our chapter. On Friday we will begin chapter 3, People Grow and Change. There will not be a study guide for the science test. We will spend the week reviewing what we have learned. Science test are open book. Science- now that we have completed our note taking on our animal research report, we will begin the writing process to this assignment. Religion- we began chapter 4, Giving Thanks and Praise. We will continue to talk about the different ways you can give thanks and praise to God. A couple of reminders..please remind your child that while they are in class they're expected to follow classroom rules. It is important to follow the class rules, such as, no talking when the teacher is talking, hands and feet to yourself, etc..these rules help our day to be more productive. Also, in the morning before the first bell rings children are suppose to be in the auditorium, they are not to be waiting outside the classroom before 7:50am. FYI-last week we were suppose to begin our animal research reports in science but I postponed until this week. ***Important Days*** Wednesday, August 29th and Thursday, August 30th are picture days. We hope to take our picture on Tuesday but sometimes 2nd grade gets bumped back to the second picture day. In class: Reading-chapter 2, in Superkids. We will be practicing reading dialogue, guide practicing observing punctuation, and reading with expression. Comprehension and parts of a story. Phonics-spelling words; decoding th&wh words; review types of sentences and end marks; contractions; homonyms; review synonyms; and onomatopoeia. Math-continue with chapter 3 adding triple digits with no regrouping and regrouping. Social Studies- types of sources. We will discuss primary and secondary sources, learn about family trees and artifacts from the past. Game day for grade K-2 from 2:30-3:45. Also, on Friday we have St. Vincent lunches. Your child will come home with a brown paper bag this week. Please pack a lunch in it and return it on Friday. This week in class: Reading- introduce the reader, The Superkids Hit Second Grade- we will begin Chapter 1; guide practice observing punctuation; and identifying characters from reader stories. Fluency, guide practice reading rhymes. Phonics- decoding and encoding sh&ch words; possessive nouns and pronouns; decoding and encoding tch words; review vocabulary words; and learn about correspondence (parts of a letter). Social Studies- our weekly will focus on being a Good Citizen. Religion- continue with chapter 2..learning about the Holy Sacraments. Science- we will begin a new chapter, Animals Grow and Change. I will assign an animal research report. I will send a letter home with further information regarding this project. Math- We will have our first math test on Wednesday, August 22nd. Your child went home with a study guide last week..please review the study guide with your child. Everything that is on the study guide will be on the test. We will discuss fiction stories, informational texts, and read and understand new vocabulary. Practice writing narrative, informational, and opinion paragraphs. Decoding -ame and -ake words; review long and short vowels; and focusing on our spelling words. Math- We will complete Chapter 1 Place Value. There will be a test next Wednesday, August 22nd. Your child will go home with a study guide on Friday, August17th. Social Studies- This week our California Studies Weekly is focusing Being Responsible. In class we will discuss rules and consequences. Science- In class we are still learning about thingLiving and Nonliving s. We will complete our plant journal and we will be planting our own little plants in class. Religion- We are still learning about what it means to be People of God. In class we are discussing what it means to belong to a community and a parish. We will also discuss the Sacraments and we will talk about the Sacrament of Baptism. It was nice meeting those of you who attended our ice cream social last week. We just completed our first day of school and it was a success. Your child will be coming home with paper work (from the office and a couple of things from me) that need to be filled out and returned right away , thank you for doing so. I have sent home a volunteer sign up sheet it is only to be returned if you are available to volunteer your time I use parent help in our classroom for centers. We will be starting centers in the beginning of September. I will contact if you are available to help out. Your second grader will have homework Monday thru Thursday (no homework today 8/6). They will be assigned homework each day and will be responsible for returning it completed the next day. Homework will consist of Math, Reading, and Spelling (this week no spelling homework). Homework assignments will always be written in the planner. Please initial the planner daily so that I know you looked at the planner.We did not write in our planners today (Mon., 8/6-so you do not have to initial the planner tonight). I often leave notes in children's planners as means of communication. If you need to speak with me you can contact me through calling the office, email, or you are welcomed to come to the classroom before school starts or after school. ***** IMPORTANT DATES***** Tuesday, November 27th-First Penance @ St. Patrick's church @ 6:00pm Saturday, May 4th-First Holy Communion @ St. Patrick's church @ 9:00am As I stated in my letter that went home last week at the ice cream social, second grade is a very special year for our students as they prepare for the Sacraments of First Penance and First Holy Communion. More information about these days will be given out as these dates approach. I just wanted give you the dates now so that you and your family may plan accordingly. Curriculum for the week: Reading/Phonics- We will not begin our Superkids reader/word workbooks for 2 weeks. Instead we will be working in our Superkids-Goodbye Summer workbook review. We will be reviewing long and short vowels; super E words; in writing we will be reviewing basic sentence structure and adding detail to sentences. Math-Our first chapter is on Place Value. Social Studies-This year in our California Studies Weekly we will learn about our community, state, country, and our world. This week California Studies Weekly begins with talking about the American Flag and the Pledge of Allegiance. Science-Chapter 1-Plants Grow. We will be learning about living and non-living things and we will talk about plants, their part, and how the grow. Religion-Chapter 1 Our Church Welcomes Us. We will discuss what it means to be apart of a parish and a community. We will also talk about what it means to be "people of God." Spelling: This week there are no spelling words.
