Hello First Grade Parents!
The students and I had a discussion about us now being in the Third Quarter and how we really need to be working like First Graders to prepare ourselves for Second Grade. I told them that now more than ever we need to follow all directions and pay attention when I am talking. For example, if a student is talking and I give a warning and their name is moved to warning on our behavior chart I should not have to tell him/her to stop talking again. If I do have to tell them again, it will be a detention. Also, if students are on the wrong page in a book and I have helped them get to the correct page only to have them on the wrong page again I will give a warning and then a detention. We have had two quarters to learn how to use our desks and get our materials out of our desks and to the correct page. It is now time for me to always expect that they can do this. Please trust me when I say all of the students are ready for this and can handle what I am expecting them to do. I hope you will support my efforts if a note comes home in the planner about this. At our faculty meeting on Friday Mrs. Blackburn spoke to all of us about the dress code. For the most part, our class is doing very well. A few things to keep in mind about our dress code: Girls: The girls have grown. Please make sure that their jumpers are the appropriate length (Knee length or right above) Girls are allowed to wear tights. Please do not wear leggings. Boys: Please make sure that the boys hair is cut. Hair should not be long around the collar or ears. Boys and Girls: At morning prayer and in the classroom: OLM Sweatshirts are the uniform. We can only wear non-uniform sweatshirts and jackets when we are at recess. I do encourage all of the kids to wear jackets/sweatshirts. We do have a few sweatshirts in the classroom if you are missing your sweatshirt. Also, no boots may be worn with the uniform. Thank you for your help in all of these matters. I will write a note in the planner letting you know of any dress code issues. Now down to this week: Reading: "Buster is Back" and "Buster's Surprise" We are working on setting and how to tell how people in the story feel, without the characters actually saying how they feel. We are also working on comparing things by adding 'er' and 'est'. Spelling Words: don't, won't, can't, before, girl, boy, two, four, about, over Writing-A personal narrative Math-Different ways to add- making a ten...for example, in our head changing 8+3 to 10+1. Science-How adult animals care for their young and how butterflies grow Art-Snowman---and coloring cards for Cherish Lunch that is during Catholic Schools Week If you have any questions about anything in this blog please send me a message or come see me. Thank you, Mrs. Scheurich Welcome back First Grade Parents!! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break!! Thank you all for the cards and gifts. I appreciate all of you and your children. I missed them all and I found it hard to sleep last night because my brain just started racing.
Today---First Semester Word Work Book of the Superkids went home. This will let you know what we did for our workbook pages in class. Every student put this workbook in their backpack. This week in First Grade: Reading: We have started contractions using n't. The way that I taught the students this was...For example: is not.....I said we take the word is and scoot the word not over next to it...isnot....then we get rid of the letter o and in the o's place we add an apostrophe....is not...to isnot...to isn't. We are reading, "Icky's Play" and "The Spingle Spangle Talent Show". Now that we are really into reading, I'm pushing the students that are ready to read with expression. Other students are practicing reading fluently-trying to not stop and sound out words that they have seen a bunch. Writing-Planning a Personal Narrative Grammar- Forming Compound Words- bedtime, seashell, playground---turning two words into one word. Spelling Words: isn't, didn't, hasn't, hadn't, aren't, wasn't, weren't, haven't, couldn't, wouldn't Math-Working with numbers to 20---when we see 15- we know that that is 10 + 5...we will test on this this week and move on to Chapter 8-Practicing adding and subtracting--looking at the signs and recognizing when we see clue words what we should do....sum, more---we add....less, fewer, difference---we subtract. In our homework we have some extra practice and I put a number line at the top, try to have your child not look at the problems they did the day before.....If they are stressed with the two pages only have them do one page front and back. Religion- Jesus is God's Son Science-Finishing up Animals Art-Snowflake ***We are in need of glue sticks...if you are able to please send glue sticks in with your child. Thank you so much.*** Reminders: Friday- January 12th- Report Cards go home-Please don't worry---The kids are all moving along well!!...Minimum Day Monday- January 15th- No School Have a wonderful week, Mrs. Scheurich |
