Thank you to all of the parents and grandparents that attended Open House. I really enjoyed seeing all of you and I hope you enjoyed seeing what we have been up to in our classroom.
This week: We took our STAR Test today. All of the students were very comfortable on the computer. We also logged onto the Superkids website. We showed them where to click so they can listen to stories. They all seemed to enjoy the learning games on the site as well. Please log-in or set-up your account as soon as possible. Our Spelling Words for this week are: sack, sock, not, nut, bet, bat, dog, dig, hat and hit. This week we have ten words on our test. From now on we will always have at least ten words on the test. The only reason we will have more than ten is if we have a bonus word. We are continuing to practice our vowel sounds, so this week we are just replacing one vowel for another....easier said than done sometimes. We will be reading a new story called: "Sal's Closet". We will also be practicing some memory words from Kindergarten....for, you, like, to, of , was and no. We will also be reviewing different forms of end punctuation. In Math this week we will start using number bonds. The students will figure out what two numbers can be added to make a new number. For example, we will start with the number ten and while using blocks students will figure out that five and five is ten....six and four....seven and three. We will be doing hands-on activities at least three days this week. I think the students will really enjoy these lessons. In Religion, we will be reviewing most of the material from last week....Things inside a church, when to pray/praise. This week we will accompany the discussion/review with writing, drawing or a worksheet. Science - Parts of a plant....roots, stem, leaves, flower, seed coat, seed, sunlight. We will also go over the function of these parts. Now that we have completed the first chapter in Science and Social Studies I am going to focus on one subject at a time. For the next couple of weeks we will be studying Science. When we finish Chapter 2 we will switch back to Social Studies. It will be a lot more enjoyable and educational to be able to focus on one subject at a time. P.E.-Skipping, hopping, freezing and following directions. Art-Crayon/Watercolor-resist News: 12:30 Dismissal on Friday-no mass I will not be in the classroom on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This is not the norm for me to miss school like this, but we have a family member in poor health and we are traveling to visit her along with other members of our family. Mrs. Marasti will be my substitute teacher all three days. I will respond back if you need to get a hold of me at the email address [email protected]. I will check my email once in the morning and once in the evening. Have a great three day weekend, Mrs. Scheurich

Welcome to the 2nd week of first grade!!
Today our homework folders went home!! Woohoo! Homework will always be given on Monday and due on Friday. I hope that this works well for all of you. I want students to get into the habit of having homework and some sort of routine, but I think it is beneficial to the student and the parents to have a little bit of wiggle room as far as when the assignments are completed. This week in first grade: Reading: We are reviewing many letter sounds that the students learned in Kindergarten. Specifically: l, s, f, t, i, e, h, u, b, r, x, k, q, j, y and z. We are also reviewing words with the endings: -an, -ot, -et, -ug, -at and -it. If time permits and the students are doing well we will add on words with the -ed and -est endings. As we are reviewing our letters and CVC words we will be refreshing our memories of the Superkids and what activities they enjoy. We will also be reading the story: "The Flat Cat". Math: We are still counting to ten and practicing how to spell and read the numbers to ten. This week we are matching numbers and starting to work on adding numbers with a zero...for example, 3+0. Religion-Parts of the Mass, items inside the a church Social Studies- Rules, laws, responsibilities and the Golden Rule Science-Rock, soil, air and water...review living and non-living things Art-Finishing our rainbow fish P.E.-Spatial Relationships-this is your spot, this is my spot....being able to leave your "home" and come back after different activities without running into another person. This week I am entering all of your emails or phone numbers into the Remind101 system. As soon as I have everyone entered I will send out a reminder. I'm hoping the reminder is going to go out on Thursday reminding you that the homework packet is due on Friday. Please look over your child's homework before they turn it in. Help your child correct any errors and encourage him/her to work neatly. This first packet is a great time to establish good habits. Have a great week!!! Mrs. Scheurich P.S. I am helping coach volleyball...I will be in the gym if you need to talk to me between 2:45 and 4:00. |
