Our first week of homework!!! This is a long blog...but important :)
Homework- The first page of the homework folder has a menu/guideline for one way that your child can complete the homework. One week of homework is given to you all at one time, but the menu is laid out in a way to not overwhelm your child and get them use to completing nightly homework. In 2nd grade homework is completed nightly and returned the next day. I do give out a packet because sometimes 1st graders have a bad day and can't handle any homework on one of the days and they can make-it-up on other days. Folders are due every Friday. Each week you will find one Backpack Page that is for practicing Reading Fluency...try to read this everyday. The other 3 Backpack pages are for practicing spelling. Only return backpack pages 4 and 5 this week...keep the fluency and the cards to practice. In addition to the Backpack Pages I have asked that your child write the spelling words and circle the vowels in the spelling words and also write some sentences using the spelling words. We will start simple and as the year goes on our Homework Menu will become a little more demanding to prepare for 2nd Grade. This week we start with Math Facts... adding zero...please return all four math fact papers. You will find a yellow paper with numbers...this is good practice to stay on top of counting/writing numbers. When your child gets to multiplication they will already have their 2's, 5's, and 10's down. The last bit of homework to be returned is the Reading Log. Please read to your child or have them read to you. This may include if they get on the Superkids Website, if they practice our High Frequency Words(list in the folder with explanation), or if they practice our short vowel words(also found in the homework folder). You will be surprised at how much an extra 15 minutes of reading will help your child. Those who do not read everyday will be falling behind by November. Thank you for your help in getting your child to read fluently. Please leave the Homework Menu, High Frequency Words, and the numbers in the folder. This week in the folder return: 4 math facts pages, spelling circle the vowels, 2 sentences written using a spelling word in each sentence, Backpack pages 4 and 5 and the Reading Log.....This will become very repetitive and smooth as the weeks go by. If you have any questions please come see me. For example, 7+3=10....7 is a part, 3 is a part and 10 is the whole. Religion-Parts of a Mass Social Studies- What is a Rule? Who makes the rules? Why do we follow rules? I hope all of the students were able to rest and recharge over the summer. I enjoyed seeing some of you last week at Back to School Night. The evening really got me excited about starting a new year. Those who attended received a packet of information. I have packets to send home with those who were unable to attend and I also put the packet on this blog in the previous post. I had a couple parents ask me about our snack/lunch procedure in class. We eat our snack at 10:00 on the playground. We all sit on the bricks while we are eating and drinking. School milk is no longer an option for morning snack. If you send milk with your child in their lunch box they may drink it at snack. Our class goes to lunch at 11:35. Every morning your child will let me know if they are having hot or cold lunch and if they would like to have milk. At the beginning of the year many of the students check their backpacks to see if they are having hot/cold lunch because they don't remember by the time they get to school...that is fine...this is all part of becoming independent and responsible. This week in first grade: Reading: Review Unit- For the next few weeks we will be reviewing who the Superkids are and introducing the Superkids to those who are new to our school. This week we will review: Doc, Lily, Frits, Hot Rod and Golly. We will review letters: D, C, G, O, L, S, T, A, F, W, N, I, H, R, B, E, M, P, V, K and U. This week's Memory Words are: I, a, the. We will read two stories: "The Flat Cat" and "Golly and the Vet". We will discuss the stories, describe and compare the characters and work on reading fluently when the same story is read repeatedly. Writing: Discuss the use of labels, draw and label a self-portrait, use nouns to complete sentences Math: Numbers to 10-Counting and writing numbers to ten in number and word form Religion: We Belong to Jesus Church, Love one another Social Studies: American and California Flags, the Pledge of Allegiance, Labor Day Vocabulary: country, labor, pledge, flag, liberty P.E.-Spatial Relationships-this is your spot, this is my spot....being able to leave your "home" and come back after different activities without running into another person. Art-Start Rainbow Fish painting I usually spend a few weeks at a time for Social Studies and then I will switch to Science for a few weeks. Homework Folders will go home starting on the 21st of August. If you have any questions, please let me know. May God bless this school year!! See you Monday, Mrs. Scheurich Welcome to First Grade! I have been anxiously waiting for the new school year and it is finally here. A lot happens quickly at the beginning of the year so please do not hesitate to ask me any questions or voice any concerns you might have. If you need to meet with me, I am available before and after school or you can contact the office and we can schedule a time to meet that is convenient for the both of us. If we work together I think that this is going to be a very successful and fun school year.
If you do not know me, my name is Amber Scheurich. This is going to be my eleventh year teaching and my third year teaching at OLM. Previously I taught within Merced City School District and McSwain Elementary School District. On a more personal note, I am married to my husband David and we have two children. David is a firefighter with CAL FIRE. Our daughter Kaylin is eight and our son Trent is six. I graduated from OLM and my children are the fourth generation from my family to attend this school. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be an educator and a parent at OLM. I look forward to meeting you all in the days ahead. God Bless, Mrs. Amber Scheurich (Share-ic) First Grade Information Communications We have five main means of communication in First Grade: The blog, your child’s homework folder, your child’s planner, and an App named Remind101. Please read your child’s planner every night and sign it. I will put any notes about lunch and milk tickets and anything you need to know that occurred during the day. The classroom blog can be found at olmlancers.com, scroll down to class blogs and click on Mrs. Scheurich’s 1st Grade. The blog is updated weekly. The homework folder will go home every Monday. The Remind101 Homework Your child will be assigned weekly homework. This will go home on Monday and needs to be completed and returned by Friday. We will not have homework the first two weeks of school, but plan for homework on Monday the 21st. Most of the homework will consist of spelling, reading and practicing math facts. Homework may contain any classwork that was not completed during school. This work I will put in the planner with a note and it will need to be completed that night and returned the next day. Classroom Management I will be using a behavior chart in class. All of the students will start each day in the “Ready to Learn” position. Students will have the opportunity to move up and down the chart as the day goes on according to their behavior. If students do end up in the bottom position, which is parent contact, you will be notified by a note in the planner, a phone call or I will try to talk to you after school. In addition to the behavior chart the students will have opportunities to receive group points according to the groups they are sitting in. The group with the most points at the end of the week will receive a reward…a pencil, eraser, free time, dismissed to recess first, etc. Individually students can also earn tickets toward a drawing at the end of each week for prizes. Prizes vary from being the line leader to class helper or something I find at Target. J Volunteers Field trip drivers, chaperones and classroom helpers are needed. If you would like to help in any of these areas please complete and return the necessary forms (see Lisa Saling in the office for details). Anyone interested in helping must have completed the Safe Environment Training and be fingerprinted. If anyone is interested in helping with some things that can be completed at home please let me know. Birthdays I have no problem with us celebrating your child’s birthday at school. Please let me know a couple days in advance if you will be bringing a treat in. I usually use the last twenty minutes of school to celebrate. Please don’t forget napkins if you bring a treat. Bathroom Policy For the first week of school I allow the students to go to the bathroom whenever they wish to go. The second week of school I let them go, but I am letting them know they really need to be going at recess and at lunch. Starting the third week of school students will lose five minutes of recess if they have to use the bathroom during class time. They are always allowed to go, but they will have a penalty. Remind101 If you are interested in being a part of Remind101- please return this paper with an email or a cellphone number that you would like to receive texts or messages through. This allows me to send out a generic message to everyone. For example….Mass tomorrow-boys need to wear uniform pants and girls need to wear their jumpers……If you do wish to be a part of this I promise I will not be sending messages every ten minutes. You are also able to send me a text message back. The rest of the group does not see your message.
