4th Week of 1st Grade!!

Reading-We finished the Review of Kindergarten today and started with our 1st Grade material. All of the students should have brought home their review book in their planner or backpack for you to see.
This week we are reading Cass's Cat and Help.
Writing- Writing sentences with detail, list things they have done, choose one item from the list to write about.
Spelling Words this Week- bunch, lunch, inch, pinch, ranch, branch, chip, chop, chick, check

Math-Chapter 2 is on number bonds. I apologize that I did not send home the information last week about this...it is in their planners today (Monday). I sent home information on Chapter 1 as well. We will continue working on spelling the words for numbers all year

Religion- Things we see in Church

Art-The Day the Crayons Quit-Coloring/Drawing Project

P.E.-Spatial Awareness, object manipulation, balance, fine/gross motor development----skip, hop, balancing a bean bag on our elbows and heads while walking, counting by 2's, 5's, 10's, jumping forward, jumping backward

Picture Day is this week!! We should be on Wednesday....but if they do not get to us on Wednesday, we go on Thursday...I will let you know by texting the group if we went on Wednesday.

Mrs. Blackburn's Husband, Mr. Harry Blackburn, is in the hospital and needs our prayers. All of the students know that Mr. Blackburn is very sick. The whole school prayed the Rosary this morning for Mr. and Mrs. Blackburn. Please keep them in your prayers.

P.S. Please try to log-in to the Superkids Website....Anything your child does on the website can be used for the reading log. I am trying to get every student set-up at home on the website...let me know if you have trouble.  I can only see what email you used to set-up last years account. I do not know the password you used. If you cannot get it working I can send you the information again, but only if you use a different email than before. The system remembers what email you have used. Thank you!!

Our first week of homework!!!   This is a long blog...but important :)

Homework- The first page of the homework folder has a menu/guideline for one way that your child can complete the homework. One week of homework is given to you all at one time, but the menu is laid out in a way to not overwhelm your child and get them use to completing nightly homework. In 2nd grade homework is completed nightly and returned the next day. I do give out a packet because sometimes 1st graders have a bad day and can't handle any homework on one of the days and they can make-it-up on other days. Folders are due every Friday.

Each week you will find one Backpack Page that is for practicing Reading Fluency...try to read this everyday. The other 3 Backpack pages are for practicing spelling. Only return backpack pages 4 and 5 this week...every week you keep the fluency and the spelling flash cards to practice.

We will start simple and as the year goes on our Homework Menu will become a little more demanding to prepare for 2nd Grade.

This week we start with Math Facts... adding zero...please return all four math fact papers. You will find a yellow paper with numbers...this is good practice to stay on top of counting/writing numbers. When your child gets to multiplication they will already have their 2's, 5's, and 10's down.

The last bit of homework to be returned is the Reading Log. Please read to your child or have them read to you. This may include if they get on the Superkids Website, or if they practice our short vowel words(also found in the homework folder). You will be surprised at how much an extra 15 minutes of reading will help your child. Those who do not read everyday will be falling behind by November. Thank you for your help in getting your child to read fluently.

Please leave the Homework Menu and the numbers in the folder. 

This week in the folder return: 4 math facts pages, spelling triangles, spelling red and blue, spelling 3x each, Backpack pages 4 and 5 and the Reading Log.....This will become very repetitive and smooth as the weeks go by.

Reading: "Get Fit" and "We Like Sports"  We will work on Memory Words: of, no, was, put, said
Adding the letter "s" to the end of words when there are more than one
Compare and Contrast our two stories

Spelling Words: big, dig, hop, mop, tug, rug, cat, flat, best, nest

If the b's and d's are reversed the word will be marked wrong.

Writing: Adding details to a sentence, writing a list, and writing sentences about what they play and what they like to do

Math- We completed Chapter 1 and started Chapter 2--an information sheet went home today in the planner about Chapter 2.....Chapter 2 is about number bonds....learning how to take two parts and adding them to make a whole. For example, 7+3=10....7 is a part, 3 is a part and 10 is the whole.

Religion-Parts of a Mass

Social Studies- What is a Rule?  Who makes the rules? Why do we follow rules?  Vocabulary Words-Responsibility, Rule, Voting

Money is donated to the SPCA.
Free Dress for $1 on Friday, money is donated to the SPCA
Also on Friday- Game Day for grades K-2, 2:30 - 3:45, this activity is $5 and includes snack. If you let me know that your child is going to game day I will take them. You do not have to pick-up your child till 3:45. As always, you may attend if you wish.
St. Vincent Lunches brought by 1st and 2nd grade. I will send a bag home on Thursday.

Welcome to Our Lady of Mercy School's 91st Year!!

Everything is going so well in class! I already love the students and am very excited about this school year! We have three new students in our class and they are wonderful!

We have a few students who do not have planners. We write in our planners every morning. Planners are a school policy for students in grades 1st through 8th. We use them everyday and they must be signed every night and returned the next day. Planners may be purchased in the store (Room 7) before school. They are $7. Thank you for helping me with this.

Students may purchase milk even though we are not having hot lunch right now. Milk tickets can also be purchased in the store before school.

We have morning snack everyday at 10:00. The school does not provide the snack. The snack is simply an item that your child brings from home and takes out of their lunch box. Some students are wanting to eat a sandwich for snack and I'm trying to explain that a snack is a smaller item and save the sandwich for lunch. Lunch is at 11:35.

We have many students that are using the bathroom during class. This is fine for now while we are all adjusting to being back at school and not having a restroom in the classroom like Kindergarten. Please let your child know that they do not need to be afraid to ask to use the restroom. I do not want students to have accidents because they are afraid of me.

Please return your Remind101 forms ASAP. I will send out a practice message letting you know that I have everything up and going.

If you have a child in any grade that is interested in Cross Country there is a meeting Wednesday, August 8th at 6:00 in the gym. The kids really have a lot of fun in Cross Country. I didn't think my own kids would like it, but they love it!! No pressure just fun. Everybody at the meets cheers for everyone. Medals are given for the top finishers and ribbons are given to others, but it really is an accomplishment to finish the race.

Reading: Review Unit- For the next few weeks we will be reviewing who the Superkids are and introducing the Superkids to those who are new to our school. This week we will review: Doc, Lily, Frits, Hot Rod and Golly. We will review letters: D, C, G, O, L, S, T, A, F, W, N, I, H, R, B, E, M, P, V, K and U.  This week's Memory Words are: I, a, the. We will read two stories: "The Flat Cat" and "Golly and the Vet". We will discuss the stories, describe and compare the characters, and work on reading fluently when the same story is read repeatedly.

Writing: Discuss the use of labels, draw and label a self-portrait, use nouns to complete sentences

Math: Numbers to 10-Counting and writing numbers to ten in number and word form

Religion: We Belong to Jesus Church, Love one another

Social Studies: American and California Flags, the Pledge of Allegiance, Labor Day
            Vocabulary: country, labor, pledge, flag, liberty

P.E.-Spatial Relationships-this is your spot, this is my spot....being able to leave your "home" and come back after different activities without running into another person.
