Hello First Grade Parents,
We are off and rolling. I have made some big changes to our classroom in the past week. We have new seats during carpet time. We also have new spots to sit in at our desks. I have moved our desks into a row pattern in order to cut down on the chit chat. Students are to be sitting in their seats on their bottom and facing forward. We are a very talkative group and I am hoping that this will help take away the temptation of talking to a friend. I have also given the students a permanent spot in line. We are in this line when we line-up for prayer, after both recesses and any other time we walk somewhere unless we are going to lunch. For lunch I have to have the students line-up in cold and hot lunch lines. I am hoping that by putting these procedures in place all of the students will be successful in class and that we learn how to act when we are walking in line around school. If students still cannot handle following directions/rules expect a note from me in the planner or a call home. I appreciate all of your help in this matter. Reading- This week we are starting Unit 2 of the Adventures of the Superkids. New stories and books are available on the website. This week we will begin the story, "What Can You Get with a Nickel?". The phonics sound that will be introduced is the "th" sound. We will also be working on the endings, "ip" and "ink". Please practice reading over your phonics words in your homework folder and read the fluency page, "Ben's Shop". Spelling Words- bath, path, math, cloth, moth, trip, flip, whip, sink, think....all of these words this week are working on phonics. Hello First Grade,
I am pretty sure I have our new blog figured out. Thank you for your patience. Reading- This week we will be reading "Ettabetta's Radish Patch" and "The Patch-it-up Shop". These are both available to read on the Superkids website. Also, it is okay if your child just listens to the story. We are still working on the "sh" and "ch" sounds. Please practice the phonics words in the homework folder and read "Fix the Clock". If your child is having difficulty reading please only make them read part of the story. The goal is to read the story smoothly by the end of the week. Spelling Words- I, my, she, her, he, his, much, such, chat, chop...The first six words are memory words and the last four are working on our phonics sound "ch". We are learning that "I" by itself is always capitalized. Also, that "I" is not just a letter, it is also a word. Writing- We will be writing a story about how your child would get Cass' Cat, Coconut, out of the tree. To receive a passing grade for writing students must have ending punctuation and start sentences with a capital letter. Also, if there are words on the board for your child to use they should be spelled correctly. Math- We are finishing reviewing Chapter 2-Number Bonds- and we will be starting Chapter 3 adding numbers to ten. This weeks homework is a little bit different. This is part of our program called Enrichment. It is designed to be used when students have a good understanding of the material and we try to expand on that. It is meant to make them think, maybe get frustrated, but overall stick with it and try their best. If you have any questions please email me, write a note in the planner or call the office and I will get back to you. Religion- Creation Science- Review parts of a plant and their functions....New vocabulary: seed, seed coat...We will also be learning about what a plant needs to survive- air, water and sun P.E.-Balance Art-Finishing up our Crayon Resist Art and our Popsicle Stick Tracing Upcoming Events: October Fest @ Hunter Farms on October 1st Pumpkin Patch- Permission slips will be coming home soon. Chaperones must have completed the required safe environment training, cleared fingerprints, and turned in the forms for driving (see office for these). Our field trip will be on October 17th. Reminders- Label all outerwear. Remind children to put their sweater or sweatshirt in their backpack when not in use. Have a great week, Mrs. Scheurich |
