This week in First Grade:

Reading: We have started contractions using n't. The way that I taught the students this was...For example: is not.....I said we take the word is and scoot the word not over next to it...isnot....then we get rid of the letter o and in the o's place we add an apostrophe....is not...to isnot...to isn't. We are reading, "Icky's Play" and "The Spingle Spangle Talent Show". Now that we are really into reading, I'm pushing the students that are ready to read with expression. Other students are practicing reading fluently-trying to not stop and sound out words that they have seen a bunch.

Writing-Planning a Personal Narrative---We will write a narrative together this week, step by step. Next week they write their own.

Grammar- Forming Compound Words- bedtime, seashell, playground---turning two words into one word.

Spelling Words: isn't, didn't, hasn't, hadn't, aren't, wasn't, weren't, haven't, couldn't, wouldn't
