Good Morning First Grade,
It has been awhile since our last blog. I would like to update you on what has been going on in first grade. Last week we finished Units 3 and 4 in Reading. Your child should have brought home their workbook for you to see. We have completed the "ng", "le", "er" and "ed" endings. We will continue to practice all of these endings throughout the year. The "ed" ending can be very difficult because the ending sound can be -ed, -d or -t. This past week we started working with the adding -ing or -ed to words. The rule that we are working on is---if a word has one vowel and one letter after the vowel you double the last letter then add "ed" or "ing". For example, hug...hugged...hugging....Another rule we are working on is if there is one vowel and two letters after the vowel you do not double the last letter...you just add the 'ed" or "ing". For example, jump...jumped...jumping. The story that we are reading this week is "The Monster Under the Bus". This story is available for practice on the Superkids Website. I'm hoping that everyone who has internet access at home can get on the website for extra practice. Please continue to read the phonics words, frequency list and fluency reading in the homework folder. ****This week you will notice you have the same phonics words and fluency read as last week. With last week being a short week, we are still working on these and are not ready for the next list.**** Math-We have finished addition in our Math book, for now. We are currently working on the basics of subtraction. In the next Chapter we work on both addition and subtraction. Social Studies-We will have a test this week on Friday. Your child will have to know: Our planet, our continent, our country, our state and what city/town they live in. They will also be tested on North, South, East and West. They will be ready for this test. Religion-Rosary and Saints P.E.-Coordination, Balance, Locomotor Skills---leap, walk slow, walk fast, big steps, little steps, skipping, hopping. We have quite a few students still working on following directions during P.E. For example, they are not to move from their home base until the whistle is blown or I say go. Unfortunately, about five students leave their base before we start. This will affect their grade. P.E. should be fun, but not silly and chaotic. The rest of the students are doing a great job. Art-Turkey centerpieces for the Thanksgiving Program Our class is in the Thanksgiving Program on Wednesday. I'm sorry for the confusion about this matter. I put the programs we are a part of in the Welcome to First Grade Information Packet at the beginning of the year, but I should have sent out a reminder. Please have your child in our classroom on Wednesday at 6:15. I am really sorry if this messes you up this week. Also, we are in the Spring Program. We are not in the Christmas Program. Reminder: All toys should be left at home. A detention will be given if I am having to have your child take toys out of his/her desk....I will let you know individually if this is an issue with your child. Progress Reports go home on Friday :) Have a great week, Mrs. Scheurich P.S. Please let me know if your child is struggling and needs extra help with homework or anything we are working on.
