This week in First Grade!!
Thank you to all of the parents that brought their child to the Spring Program...we worked very hard on perfecting our song...A BIG Thank You to Bellah who played the piano for us. She put in a lot of extra time learning our song. Reading-Reviewing our long vowel trickers from last week---starting to learn the "aw" sound and "all" sound...."aw" makes the short "o" sound and "all" sounds like the short "o" with an "l". Our story for this week is "Play Ball". Spelling Words: paper, even, silent, open, music, he's, I'm, we're, you're, she'll Math: We have finished Chapters 10, 11, and 12....they were short chapters. The tests for 11 and 12 are going home this week. Chapter 13 is focusing on adding and subtracting to 40. We are using a place-value chart to add and subtract. The students are learning to regroup. For example: 18 + 13 = Tens Ones 1 8 We are adding the 8 and 3 which is 11. We put the + 1 3 the one in the ones column and regroup to put the one ten in the tens column. We then add the the numbers in the tens column to get 3. I realize the homework seems like a lot more this fourth quarter...I just really want the students to finish the year strong and be prepared for second grade. Science: We took the Science Test on Matter:Solids, Liquids, and Gases...this will go home in the packet this week. We will now go back to Social Studies and focus on Community Helpers.
