Hello First Grade Parents!!!

I printed out test scores from our reading tests that we took after Easter Break. They will be in the planner on Tuesday. Please come see me if you have any questions. Remember 1.1 is considered first grade first month....3.5 is third grade fifth month.

This is our last week of homework. This week we will have four nights of homework. The homework will be passed out each day and is due the next morning. This is a practice run for next year. I'm sorry that the days of having homework for a few days to complete it are over...your babies are growing up. :) If you aren't excited about the homework change try to fake it for the students because they are feeling like big kids.
What I have assigned is related to what we do in class and the one reading comprehension paper is just really great practice for where they are with understanding what they read.

Reading:  "Ettabetta's E-mail" and "Zoo Clue". "Ettabetta's E-mail" will go home tomorrow for reading fluency practice. Keep this reading at home.

Spelling:  live, eight, old, hold, write, raise, leave, noise, house, please
The last five words are our tricky words, there is no reason for an 'e' to be at the end of the word.

Math---Finishing telling time. Starting counting money.

In the afternoons we will be finishing up some religion and working on summer art.

This week:
Field Trip on May 22nd----Free Dress---Bring a lunch
8th Grade Carnival---May 24th---$5 for a wrist band. Food and drinks are about $1 each. $5 is plenty for food. We are at the carnival from 10:00 to 12:00.
Minimum Day---Friday May 24th
Last day of school---May 31st---10:00 dismissal----I do give all of the students that did not receive an award this morning (20th) an award after mass on the 31st....If your child will not be here :( please let me know---I want them to have their award and their report card.

Thank you and God Bless all of you,
Mrs. Scheurich

Parents may set-up an e-wallet online and then your children do not need to bring money to school for their purchases. The book fair website is http://www.scholastic.com/bf/ourladyofmercyschool7

Report Cards go home on March 20th.

The D Street Shelter recently added feeding breakfast and lunch for 50 people. The students that are in CJSF (7th and 8th grade students) wrote a menu for the days during Lent. The way that the meals are divided is by Faith Family. Your child would end up bringing one thing. A paper went home in the planner for the students that are in Faith Families 1-5. The day to bring the food and what to bring is circled. Do not cook the food. At the end of this week, students in families 6-10 will bring home a note in their planner of their one item to bring. This is just one way we can try to be more like Jesus during Lent and help others. If you have any questions please ask.

Have a great week,
Mrs. Scheurich

Hello First Grade Parents:

This week in First Grade:

Reading: "You and Me and the Superkids" and "A Super Day at Happy Land". We are focusing on long-vowel trickers this week. Long-vowel trickers are words with a V/CV words with a long-vowel sound at the end of the first syllable. For example: mu/sic, spi/der.

Math---Finishing Chapter 8-Ways to add and subtract to 20

Religion--Lent---Practicing for Ash Wednesday Mass---Our class is responsible for this mass. Some of the students brought home readings to practice for Wednesday...please practice. I will do my best to have every student that wants to read/participate at Mass do so...we are also in charge of The May Crowning/Grandparent's Day Mass in May.

Science--Test on Weather---Start Seasons

Art---Leprechaun

Have a great week,
Mrs. Scheurich

P.S. We start Penny Wars tomorrow. All of the money collected is going towards Relay for Life. Our class gets points by collecting pennies. Other classes may attack us with nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar bills. Pennies are positive points and all other money is negative points. This will go on for the month of March. The kids LOVE it.

In addition to the Penny War, classes have a water bottle that may be filled with dimes. If we fill our water bottle with dimes it is about $100 that is donated to relay.

Thank you to all of the students that attended Mass on Saturday!!

This week in First Grade:

Reading---"Cass Takes the Cake" and "Golly Helps" This week we will be working on adding 'er' and 'est' to the endings of words that end with a y. We have to drop the y, add an i, then add er and est. For example: hungry, hungrier, hungriest.

Spelling---say, may, play, happier, happiest, down, too, work, many, first

Writing---How-to build a snowman---revising/catching mistakes in our writing---We will also be taking our 2nd Writing Assessment on Tuesday the 12th. I will show you the results at the March Conference.

Math: Ways to Add and Subtract---When we have 7+5, try to see that we can take 3 from the 5 and add to the 7 to make 10, which changes the problem from 7+5, to 10 +2. This is difficult for some and they don't like it, but others choose this form of addition.  We also started timed tests. The students have two minutes to complete 13 problems. We start with +0.

Religion: Jesus Teaches Us About Forgiveness

Science---Weather, wind, condensation, evaporation---what the weather looks/feels like during each season

Art---Valentines Day Art

This week we will have a Valentine's Day party at 1:45. Students may bring cards for their classmates. We have 28 students total. It makes things run smoothly if you only have your child sign their name. Writing every student's name on each card makes passing out very difficult.

Have a great week and enjoy your week off next week!!!

, We had a great Catholic Schools Week!! I hope your child(children) said that they had a fun week.

This week in first grade:

Reading: "My Happy Rainy Day" and "In Case of Rain"
We are learning that y is sometimes a vowel. When a word ends in y and y is the only vowel, it stands for the long i sound. For example: by, my, try, cry.  Also, y can stand for the long e sound. When a word ends in y and has another vowel that is not next to the y, then y stands for the long e sound. For example: happy, silly. When y is at the end of the word next to the vowel a, the y is silent and the a makes the long a sound. For example: play, clay, stay

Spelling: by, fly, cry, try, belly, jelly, smelly, bunny, funny, sunny

Writing: Explanatory Writing: how-to writing---Writing all the steps for doing something

Math---Adding and Subtraction to 20, subtraction minus 9....next week we start timed tests back at addition---addition will be in the homework.

Religion--We celebrate the Eucharist

Science---Weather---making a thermometer---weather cycle

Art--Seasons trees

Progress Reports go home on Friday!!!
Science Fair is on Wednesday at 6:00---We will have a class project at the fair....attendance is optional for first grade---Our project will be up in the classroom for a couple days. All 5th-8th grade students will be at the fair with their projects.

Have a great week!!
