Thank you First Grade Parents for such a wonderful year!! I had such a great time with all of your children. I hope when the students think about first grade they have big smiles on their faces.
This week I have been trying to get all of the telling time and counting money practice in that I can while still having fun. Tuesday will be the last day that we are working on school work all day. On Wednesday we will clean out our desks and have a little fun. We will be experimenting with Soda Floats-----Ice cream is the solid and the soda brings in the gas and the liquid. Please do not tell your child about this or they will ask me all day long when we are going to do this. Thursday----Field Day----While Kindergarten is in at their prayer service we will be in class playing board games---please send your child with a beach towel and a board game.---I have a water ballon toss game that we will do and a version of a bucket brigade for them to play as well...they will not be soaked if they follow directions, however if you would like to send your child with dry clothes that would probably be a good idea. :) I am not forcing any of the students to play if they hate the idea of getting wet, but it never hurts to be prepared for those that do. We will also play Bocce and a game I call Crab Ball with a giant soccer ball. In the afternoon we will be watching a movie with the rest of the school and having snacks. Mrs. Gutierrez sent a letter home asking for everybody to send in $5 for a pizza party on Thursday...on that day the school provides hamburgers and hot dogs for each class...so the money that comes in will be used towards drinks and sides for the students to eat with their lunch. Also we will be having ice cream sundaes after our lunch and before our movie. On Friday after mass I will be giving each student their own award in a mini awards ceremony---they are a little silly but cute awards...you may join us if you like....I will be done right at ten. Please try to not take your child right after mass and come to school on Friday---report cards go home as well. I will send any extra lunch and milk tickets home with your child in their report card. I will also be sending home a parent report of the most recent reading test we took....It gives you your child's ZPD...for example, your child is reading/comprehending at a 2.1....Second Grade, First Month level...buy/checkout books in the 2.4-3.4 reading level so your child is challenged but not too challenged. Over the summer please keep reading!!! 20 minutes a day, at least, is all you need. If any of you would like your child to get a jump on second grade or review first grade material over the summer please talk to Mrs. Gargano about her Summer Enrichment. She works on reading and/or math. If you have any questions please send me a message through remind 101 or I will be here on Tuesday and probably other days closing out the school year. It has been truly a blessing to teach your child this year!! Have a great break!! Love, Mrs. Scheurich

Hello First Grade Parents,
I did not have a blog last week so I just want to say thank you to all of you who attended the May Crowning Mass/Grandparent's Day. Please thank the grandparents for coming that day as well. The Mass was beautiful and went without a hitch. I am so proud of all the students. It isn't easy to get up in front of people and they did. We finished our Superkids workbook for the past 8 units today. I will send it home today unless your child has makeup pages from last week. We will not have anymore Spelling Tests or Homework Folders go home. The only homework I will send home is subtraction flash cards for the students to practice which do not need to be returned. I also might send home some practice math worksheets for counting money and telling time. These will be in the planner and due the next day...like their homework will be next year. In class we will be working on reading our unit stories that are on the Superkids website, but not in our reader. We will also be reading our last Super Duper Magazine Informational Text. In addition, we have our final writing assessment to take. For Math, I am using Touch Money to teach the students how to count many coins. In First Grade we count pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. To add money using Touch Money a dot is placed on each coin that adds up to its value. Each dot is worth five cents. Pennies do not have a dot, nickels have one dot, dimes have two dots, and quarters have five dots. Social Studies- We are working on understanding that our school is in the City of Merced, Merced is in the State of California, California is a state that is in the country of The United States of America, and the USA is on the planet Earth. They get very confused with this, so we will be working on an art project to help with this concept. Upcoming Dates May 17th---Our field trip to UC Merced May 18th---8th Grade Carnival 10:00-12:00/12:30 Dismissal/Free Dress May 24th---Field Day---Hamburger/Hot Dog lunch provided for free---Free Dress May 25th---Last Day of School---10:00 Dismissal---Wear uniform Please see me with any questions. This week we are busy practicing for the May Crowning Mass. Every student in our class is involved with this mass. Readings to practice at home will be stapled to planners tomorrow (Tuesday) for those who are reading. We only have thirteen readers for this mass so not everyone will have a reading part. If your schedule permits please try to attend this mass because it is beautiful. Mass is on Friday at 8:15. On Friday we will also celebrate Grandparent's Day. All Grandparents are invited to attend. After mass they will visit the classrooms, the library, have their picture taken and have breakfast. Grandparents may take their grandchild with them afterwards since Friday is a minimum day. If grandparents do take their grandchild home they still need to get a pass from the office and bring it to me...thank you. I hope your child came home and told you about all of the great activities that went on last week.
This week in First Grade: Reading: "It's So Hot!" and "The Wish". We are learning how to read words with contractions. Our contractions are paired with pronouns and is, am, will, and are. For example: I'm, we're, it's and he'll. I told the students when a letter is taken out of a word to form a contraction that letter is always a vowel. When we worked on the contraction not...we took out the letter o...did not...changed to didn't. This week we are also working with will...so not only will we take out the letter i, the letter w will also go away...for example...he will is changed to he'll. Writing: We are working on story evidence and using because to connect opinions and reasons. This is really working on comprehension too. Grammar: Homophones-there/their, it's/its, you're/your Spelling: I'm, he's, she's, it's, we're, you're, I'll, he'll, she'll, you'll I'm and I'll need to have a capital "I' to be spelled correctly. This is due to the fact that I'm stands for I am and I'll stands for I will and I by itself is always capitalized. Math: Homework folders and in class we are back to practicing addition....this time they are adding different numbers not just the same number on the whole page. In our math book we are moving onto Chapter 9--Length. Religion: Celebrate the Eucharist---We are also starting to practice for the Ash Wednesday Mass. Ash Wednesday is next week, February 14th. Social Studies: Past, Present, Future Art: Finishing Lady Bug Art and starting Valentine Art Progress Reports go home on Friday!! Valentine's Day will be celebrated on the 13th. If your child would like to handout something to the class please bring it on Tuesday the 13th. We will not celebrate Valentine's Day on the 14th because it is Ash Wednesday. Please come see me if you have any questions. Science Fair: Tuesday, February 6th at 6PM---We will have a poster up of our class activity that we did on Friday called "Sink or Float". If your child was not here I'm sorry that they missed out on this fun and educational activity. We went to the lab over in the junior high. We had a good time. If you would like to see our display I will have it in the classroom on Thursday and Friday if you can't make it to the fair. I know our class doesn't have individual displays but they love Science so much I think they would think what the older students have done is interesting and it's always neat to see what your buddy or faith family members are working on. Come see me or send me a message if you have any questions. :) God Bless You as we prepare for the Lenten Season, Mrs. Scheurich Happy Catholic Schools Week!!
Thank you to all of you who helped and/or attended the auction on Saturday. It was a fun night and a great way to celebrate our school! This week: Reading: We will be reading "Cass Takes the Cake" and "Golly Helps". We will be learning how to add 'er' and 'est' to words that end in y....for example- fluffy, fluffier, fluffiest. The 'y' makes the long e sound and when we go to add 'er' and 'est' to words we change the 'y' to an 'i' and then add the ending. We will also be learning/reviewing that when we add 'er' and 'est' to the end of the words it is used to compare things.
