DearPre-k families,
Last week we began our last theme, Ready For Kindergarten and Moving on. It has been such an amazing year. The children have grown up so much. I have enjoyed watching them build their friendships together. We have been talking about their accomplishments throughout the year and what it will be like next year in kindergarten. We are continuing to review letters and numbers as well as rhyming, blending and ending sounds. We learned about how Our Lady of Fatima appeared to three small children as we celebrated her feast day on May 13th. If you would like to watch the children's version of the story, I posted it on Seesaw last week. This week, we will review the Rosary, review making patterns and talk about making friends in kindergarten. We will be attending Mass outside on Friday, May 21st. If your child attends school on Friday, please have them arrive before 7:55am so that they have a chance to use the bathroom before we leave for mass. Also, please have them wear their blue OLM t-shirt. Next week will be our last week of preschool. We will read some special books and do fun things that the kiddos enjoy. We will celebrate children that have summer birthdays on Wednesday, May 26th with a special snack. The 2020-2021 preschool year will conclude on Thursday, May 27th. It seems as though the mosquitos are back. Please apply mosquito repellent to your child before they come to school. If you are in need of summer child care, please see Mrs. Mary for registration to our summer program. Please remember if your family is able to support the Little Caesars’ Pizza fundraiser, we would greatly appreciate it. You can send the link to family and friends. The pizza kits are shipped directly to your home. We are currently at 30% of our goal. Please place your orders by May 19th. It has truly been a pleasure to teach your children this year. Thank you so much for your support throughout. May God bless your families and your children as they enter kindergarten. Sincerely, Mrs. Veronica

May is upon us!! We have almost made it through the year. We are in the last week of our Growing and Changing theme. This past week, we talked about eating healthy. We talked about foods that are everyday foods and foods that are sometimes foods. We learned about Myplate and how to fill our plate with proper portions. We also began Numbers Bootcamp. We are doing 20 days of numbers!! Yes, the Silly hats are back and the kiddos love them! We had a fun time learning about Noah’s Ark. We made a fun ark craft and learned that the Lord watches over all who love him. We also had a fire drill and an earthquake drill. Some of the kiddos didn’t enjoy the loud noise of the fire alarm, but they thought it was pretty fun to get under the tables.
This week, we will be learning about how plants grow and have an opportunity to watch something grow. We will continue to learn about numbers. We will also continue to review our letters and sounds. Very exciting news!! Preschool will be attending the all-school mass on Friday, May7th. This is the mass where we honor Mother Mary during the May crowning. If your child attends school on Friday, they will need to be at school prior to 8:00am so they can go to the bathroom and wash hands before we leave for mass. We will leave at 8:05. We will also be working on a special Mother’s day project and something to recognize our grandparents. Don’t forget to check your email for information on the Scholastic book order. This is a great chance to stock up on books for summer reading. Orders are due by May 14th. Also, check your email for the Little Ceasar’s Pizza kit order information. Pizza kits get delivered right to your home. Please share the link with family and friends. Orders can be placed through May 19th. We appreciate your participation in these fundraisers that also benefit our preschool. We will celebrate summer birthdays on Wednesday, May 26th with a special snack, and preschool will close out the school year on Thursday, May 27th. If you are in need of summer care, please see Mrs. Mary for registration for our summer program. Thank you, Mrs. Veronica Dear Pre-k Families Last week, we finished up our Construction Zone theme with a week of Art. We talked about different forms of art and ways to create art. We made a band and explored art with musical instruments. We read some fun books by Herve Tule called Mix it up and Press Here. We explored mixing paint colors to make new colors. We also read a book by David McKee called Elmer. Elmer is a patchwork elephant that just wants to look like everyone else. We tied a story extension to art by making our own Kandinsky-inspired Elmers! We used Kandinsky’s Squares with Concentric Circles for inspiration. We finished up our week with a fun story called I’m Not Just a Scribble… by Dian Alber. We made our own ‘Scribble’ inspired drawings. It was a fun week. This week, we started our new theme, Growing and Changing. During this theme, we will explore growing up healthy, eating healthy and how plants grow. We are starting Number Bootcamp and we will be working on numbers 1-20 for the next 20 days. We will celebrate Earth Day as we talk about being responsible for taking care of God’s creation. We are also working on the letter X and beginning sounds. Please remember to make sure you get your child registered for Kindergarten so that you have a spot reserved. If you are not sure, please make an appointment to see Mrs. Blackburn to talk it out. Don’t forget to order books from the Scholastic book order. There are so many great book choices and ordering books helps our preschool get free books. Please watch your email for information from Mrs. Mary about our Little Caesars Pizza fundraiser. You can share the link with family and friends and have delicious pizza kits delivered right to your door. If you are in need of child care this summer, please see Mrs. Mary for registration. Thank you Mrs. Veronica Dear Pre-k parents, Well, March is upon us, and the school year is at a very busy time. Our school’s biggest fundraiser is quickly approaching. The Auction will be held online next week. Please follow the Our Lady of Mercy School Facebook page for details. Pictures of the items should start posting beginning on Friday. Thank you for supporting already by contributing to our class projects, and donating items to add to the auction. We appreciate whatever way you are able to help. Thank you again to the Mahacek family for the beautiful Headboard Bench! It is fabulous and I know many people are going to bid on it. We have been filling up the baskets under the bench with all of our favorite things, including a copy of “THE RAINBOW BOOK!” It is the class favorite! Wednesday night, March 10th, is Kindergarten Informational night!! I can’t believe it's time! This is a zoom meeting this year and Mrs. Gargano will be zooming live from her Kindergarten class room. Please plan to attend even if you don’t think you are going to attend OLM next year. It is definitely worth sitting through. Parents/Guardians in attendance will be entered into a raffle for a free registration. The meeting will be at 6:00pm. I hope to see you there. Please see me if you have any questions. Registration starts March 5th. Please make sure that if you are planning on attending OLM school or preschool next school year, you need to turn in your registration ASAP to reserve your child’s spot, as space may be limited. If you are in need of child care during the summer, please let me or Mrs. Mary know. Children 6 years and under(2 ½) are welcome to attend as long as they have not entered 1st grade If you have not purchased your See’s Candy, now is the time. Please support our preschool by sending the link to friends and family. Candy will be directly shipped to their choice of address. This is a perfect way to prepare for yummy Easter treats. Please get your orders in by Friday, March 12th. We are asking each family to sell $100 worth of candy for us to make our selling goal. Thank you so much for your support. Thursday, March 25th, Jay Sousa will be on campus taking Easter pictures with the live bunnies. Please fill out a form to participate. Only children that have turned in the picture packet will go down to be photographed. We will continue learning about Lent as we are focusing on learning to pray the Stations of the Cross, We are also starting our new theme Construction Zone. This is one of our favorite themes. It is a tradition in our class to sand, paint and hammer our own cross. During lent, we will have the crosses blessed by Father John and then they will be sent home for your family to enjoy. I know most of you already have one that your older child made when they were in my class. This is one of the most special projects we do and the children really enjoy it. Please be thinking about a project that your child can make at home with some assistance from family members. We will be doing a show and tell. Show and tell will be ‘something I have made.’ This should be something your child is able to make with some assistance if needed. It can be an art project, a wood project, baking or anything that they can make. This year we will do it on Zoom. You will need to take a video of your child talking about and showing the process of making their project. We will not be able to bring them to school this year, but we will watch the video in class and they can talk about it and answer questions in class. I will send more out about this project later. I will continue to assess the children in preparation of parent teacher conferences that will take place the week of March 22nd. I will send out zoom links as it gets closer to conference week. Please contact me if you have any questions. Thank you, Mrs. Veronica Dear Pre-k Families,
I hope that you and your families have had an enjoyable winter break. I am looking forward to getting back together and continuing our Animal theme. We will continue with a week of bugs and then a week of animal life cycles. This week we will be reviewing slant lines with letters N and V. We will also be reviewing letters Ii, Ee and Tt. Last week, our church celebrated Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent. This week we will be talking about Ash Wednesday and learning about Lent. Lent is the season before Easter. I will be working on individual assessments in preparation of upcoming parent teacher conferences. There is a sign up sheet if you would like to have a Zoom meeting with me to discuss your child’s progress. If the times available do not work out for your family, please let me know and I am happy to work out a better time for you. Our school is preparing for our biggest fundraiser which is a dinner and auction. This year it will take place virtually with a take out New York steak dinner. Please see the Dinner/Auction flyer. We are working on a class auction item and I am asking for a $5 donation from each family to help offset the cost of the class baskets to go with our Headboard Bench donated by the Mahacek family. The Preschool is also doing our annual See’s Candy fundraiser. The proceeds from the See’s Candy sale go directly to the preschool. We are asking each family to sell or purchase items totaling $100. If each family is able to do this, we will be able to meet our goal of $3,000. We appreciate your participation. Please see the email from Mrs. Mary for the online link to share with family and friends. Thank you for your support over the past few weeks. As we all work together to get through these difficult times. I have appreciated during the school year when you have kept your children home when they have been sick or possibly exposed. I am also following appropriate protocol to ensure that our class remains safe. Please know that keeping my classroom safe and your children safe is a top priority for me and for our school. I have been exposed to the virus and I have continued to test negative. I have taken a third test and as long as it also is negative and the appropriate amount of days has passed that the CDC and the County of Merced Public Health Department recommends, I will return. Please know that I am working from home and I am continuing to teach my online class from home. Mrs. Mary and I are in contact daily as I had laid out the lesson plans for her in advance. She is doing a great job and enjoys being back in the classroom. I have been able to Zoom into the classroom on a few occasions and talk with the children and lead them in music and movement exercises as well as prayer. What a blessing Zoom has been during this time. This week in the classroom, the children continue to learn about weather. We are focusing on snow and ice. They are learning about snowflakes and playing with ice, watching how it melts with the addition of water and salt. This is a review week and Mrs. Mary will be reviewing letters and sounds as well as basic concepts that the children have been working on throughout the year. Syllables, beginning sounds, blending, math skills, pre-reading skills and all the things they need to prepare for kindergarten. In our social emotional curriculum, we are learning about Managing Disappointment this week. In handwriting, we are working on the letter Cc. In religion, we are preparing for Catholic Schools week next week. We are reminded that we are blessed that we are a part of a school where we can practice our Catholic Faith and share God’s words. We continue to talk about how God wants us to love him with our whole heart and God wants us to love others. We have also been learning about the Golden Rule. Mrs. Mary says they are doing such a great job and really understand it. I am preparing for our next theme, Awesome Animals. I am also planning for our Valentine's day celebration. Our celebration will take place on Thursday, February 11th. I have sent the snack sign up list to Mrs. Mary and she will have it posted by Wednesday. We will be making Valentine’s day bags in class, if your child would like to bring in Valentine cards to share with their friends. This is a great time for your child to practice writing their name. Please have them write their own name on the cards they wish to share. Please do not have them write names in the To: spot. We leave this blank so it is easier for them to share in class. There are 11 children in our class. Looking ahead, school will close on Friday, February 12th for winter break. School will resume on Monday, February 22nd. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at veronica.jasso@olmlancers.com I am always happy to hear from you. Most sincerely Mrs. Veronica Dear Pre-k Families, Last week we were in week two of our theme Season’s all Around. We continued to learn about the 4 seasons and how they change throughout the course of the year. We read The Mitten by Jan Brett and our nursery rhyme was The Three Little Kittens. In math, we worked on counting sets. We continued to learn about things associated with winter, such as ice and snow and snowflakes. We also learned about Dr. Martin Luther King and how he wanted peace and harmony for everyone. In religion, we learned about the Golden Rule and following the commandments of loving God with our whole hearts and being kind and loving to others. In our social emotional curriculum, we learned about having strong feelings and the first step to dealing with them. In handwriting, we worked on writing the letter Ss. This week, we were closed on Monday, January 18th to observe the Dr. Martin Luther King holiday. During this week, we will be in week 3 of our theme and focus on how the seasons change. We will be reading The Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson & Jane Chapman as we learn about how some animals hibernate during the winter. During this week, in handwriting, we will be writing the letter Qq. In our social emotional curriculum, we are learning how to name our feelings. Thank you, Mrs. Veronica |
